Freak Show Without A Tent Swimming with Piranhas Getting Stoned in Fiji and Other Family Vacations Nevin Martell 9780615889337 Books

At first, Freak Show Without A Tent appears to be a hysterical collection of stories about exotic travel by a family only slightly weirder than yours. It is that, and many of the situations the Martells find themselves in will make you laugh out loud. By the time you finish this really enjoyable little book, however, you'll realize it is much more.

Through Nevin's detailed and flowing writing you gain an insight into how one family changes as their children pass through adolescence. As you share some of the highlights of those tumultuous years the reader inevitably reflects on his/her own family and how each member of that family has to sacrifice a little to make the whole thing work.

That self sacrifice is not easy, and it's not always pretty. Nevin doesn't shy away from how hard it is to make a family work in modern America, even when those modern Americans are exploring the remote reaches of the south pacific and south America. So buy this book for the adventure and the laughs. There are plenty of both. As you read it, however, take a moment to enjoy the deeper observations and reflect on how crazy your own family is. How no one in a family gets to do exactly what they want exactly when they want to. And yet those little sacrifices are worth it, because for good or ill our families define who we are and who we will be. Whether we emulate our parents or use them as the epitome of what we do not want to be, their influence is undeniable. That gets explored in this little gem of a book as well.

Highly recomended

Freak Show Without A Tent Swimming with Piranhas Getting Stoned in Fiji and Other Family Vacations Nevin Martell 9780615889337 Books Reviews

This book contains a number of laughs but also some touching passages. Martell affectionately describes his family's numerous quirks as he writes with vivid detail about its exotic vacations. One of its best features is its description of its locations, especially some of the less-than-desirable spots to which Nevin's exuberant father hauled his sometimes-reluctant wife and children. It's a great gift for anyone with an appetite for out-of-the-way travel.
A terrific read! I loved reading about Nevin's adventures all over the globe with his father. The book is filled with interesting facts and is a fun read.
Hilarious, touching, interesting for the armchair traveler. Only maddening note were a few unintentional Spanish errors. I really enjoyed it and want to read more!
I REALLY wanted to like this a lot. I still actually like it, but I'm not compelled to pick it up and continue reading. Not sure why. The adventure is definitely there. I've not given up on this book, however! I'm going to stick with it and see if it continues to grow on me.
Nevin Martell's family saga is a lot more than a quirky travelogue. As he recounts the often funny true stories of various family outings and vacations, he sensitively and insightfully deals with the human condition and chronicles the gradual disintegration of his own parents' marriage. Nevin uses vivid description and humor make his story come alive as an entertaining, funny but also serious narrative - clearly worth a read.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this creatively intricate tale of life as young Nevin Martell. His detailed storytelling transported me into wild adventures that belong in the fictional realm. Emotional interjections were skillfully placed, and my attachment to the characters was complete by the second chapter. I will admit to being extremely disappointed that his parents split, thus causing the stories to skip from age 17 to age 38. I was hoping love would prevail, but the hard truth is that it's not really that simple. I would love to read a synopsis of what happened to Nevin's relationship with Jo as they aged, as well. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for some interesting entertainment.
What an incredible story! Told by Nevin Martell when he was growing up with an incredibly adventurous, thrill-seeking father. I simply cannot imagine traveling to the far ends of the earth at such a young age and witnessing the things Nevin did. He tells his story with wit, humor and a little sarcasm thrown in. While I love traveling and seeing the sites, I would never have the backbone to travel to the remote places Nevin's dad took his family. What a ride!
